The Ordinary Seaman is a Deck Ratings, and his/her main duty is to assist in keeping the ship clean and well maintained, and to assist in all other Deck Operating work, including bridge watches.

  • Imposing and maintaining safety consciousness
  • Cleaning, rust scaling and painting of the vessel’s hull, decks, masts and superstructure.
  • Cleaning, rust scaling and painting of the various vessels’ inside/enclosed space.
  • Maintaining and rust scaling of the tanks
  • Maintaining of all vessel’s running gear and mooring/anchoring equipment
  • Maintaining of safety and lifesaving equipment when ordered/requested.
  • Maintaining and repairing of the cargo onboard loading and discharging gear and associated equipment.
  • Keeping quarters, as well as the common ones, clean and tidy.
  • Participating in all jobs and tasks in connection with safety of own vessel or the other and/or persons and/or environment as directed by the person in charge.
  • He/she shall be observant and alert in order to give suggestions to Bosun about improvement in the shipboard operation.
  • He/she shall participate in educating and guiding the younger and less experienced deck crewmember in the daily operation, in order to improve the quality of the Deck Department.
  • He/she must be familiar with the daily operation in the safety and environmental operation onboard.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SEMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum one year experience working in a shipboard environment is required.
  • Basic to Intermediate level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or foreign equivalent is required.

REQUIRED ABILITIES / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell. All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting more than 25 pounds. This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
