Duties include (but are not limited to): 

The Safety Officer on a cruise ship is responsible for ensuring the vessel complies with international maritime safety regulations, company safety standards, and procedures. This includes overseeing emergency preparedness, conducting safety drills, training crew members, inspecting equipment, and maintaining safety records.

Key Responsibilities:
Safety Oversight & Compliance:

Ensure the ship complies with SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), ISM (International Safety Management) Code, MARPOL, and other relevant maritime laws and regulations.

Maintain and update the ship’s Safety Management System (SMS).

Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits.

Emergency Preparedness:

Develop and implement emergency response plans (e.g., fire, man overboard, abandon ship).

Lead and coordinate emergency drills for passengers and crew, including fire drills, lifeboat drills, and evacuation procedures.

Serve as the Officer in Charge of emergency response during an actual emergency.

Training & Crew Supervision:

Provide ongoing safety training to all crew members.

Ensure all crew are familiar with their emergency duties and responsibilities as per the muster list.

Supervise and train the firefighting and damage control teams.

Equipment & Maintenance:

Inspect and ensure readiness of safety equipment including lifeboats, fire extinguishers, life jackets, breathing apparatuses, sprinklers, and alarms.

Coordinate with technical teams to maintain firefighting systems, life-saving appliances, and emergency systems.

Documentation & Reporting:

Keep detailed records of safety drills, incidents, equipment inspections, and crew certifications.

Report all safety concerns, near misses, and incidents to the Captain and company head office.

Maintain and review safety logbooks and audit trails.

Required Qualifications:
Valid STCW certifications

Certificate of Competency (COC) 

Experience working on large passenger vessels is highly preferred.

Comprehensive knowledge of maritime safety regulations and emergency procedures.
